The mind can't grasp this. It can only be lived. Don't settle for anything less than direct experience. This is juicy! Entrenched beliefs about awakening or philosophical truths cannot give you this juice. You must drink it up yourself. See it in your own experience.

Recovery-A New Paradigm

Through resting in presence, and allowing all thoughts, emotions, and sensations to be as they are, the addict begins to experience a newfound freedom to not follow each thought, emotion, or sensation that arises. Through resting in presence, the pull towards the object or towards the future can dissolve away on its own. This approach to recovery is more helpful than developing a better story or ego. This approach helps the addict see through the ego itself. It helps the addict see through the sense of separation. When the addict no longer identifies with thoughts, the thoughts are allowed to come through freely and uninterruptedly. But the clinging to those thoughts for a sense of self releases itself. In that release, the addict stops seeing himself as an object, cut off and separate from other objects "out there." Therefore the seeking towards those objects releases itself. And the incessant, over-active thinking relaxes. Through presence, the addict experiences a quiet mind. That quiet mind is like a warm bath that embraces him in all situations, providing a sense of freedom, peace, and well-being. When the addict experiences real freedom, peace, and well-being, the need for a fix dissolves away. And the need to identify himself as an addict or "sick person" falls away too.

In the moment you find yourself in conflict, instead of going straight to these first tendencies, take a moment of rest. Relax into the spacious openness of awareness. See that what you are in the most basic sense is this awareness. In awareness, an assumption is happening. The assumption is that there is a self and an other in conflict. So go look for the other. Is the other the thought of the person’s name? Look directly at the person’s name in your mind. Look at the letters of the name, one by one. Is THAT thought the person? No.

There is no end to freedom because it is not a thing. Only things have beginnings and endings or starting points and arriving points. Freedom is not static conclusion. It is not a one liner you repeat, like "no self." It's not the conclusion “there is no self” or even “there is no world.” These are viewpoints that come and go. If you believe them, then that is all you have–belief. Nondual realization is beyond belief. So when you find yourself landing on these conclusions, have a good laugh. And have the honesty and authenticity to not let freedom become just another one liner that you repeat. Not any of these one-liners or any other. To be really free is to be free of any fixed conceptions, including any of these that appear on this page.

Fear is more than just bunch of thoughts you are having about the future. It is an entire body and mind experience involving thoughts, emotions, and sensations. Emotions are the fuel for the stories about the future that run through our heads. The key is to become aware of the emotional and sensory energy in the body when you are experiencing fear. And these thoughts, emotions, and sensations are happening within your capacity to be aware. So this is all about recognizing awareness as the space in which thoughts, emotions, and sensations come and go.

The Middle Way is freedom from dualistic extremes. It is freedom from fixed viewpoints about yourself, others, and the world. But it is also freedom from fixed viewpoints that there is no self, no other, and no world. It is freedom from fixed views such as "everything exists separately" and "nothing exists." Freedom from "I am a separate person" and from "All is Oneness," as fixed views. It is freedom from personal viewpoints and impersonal viewpoints. It is freedom from relying exclusively on thinking in your life. Yet it is freedom from denying thought altogether. The Middle Way is, ultimately, the view of this site and Scott's message. Scott's Living Realization text is a Middle Way view. When you have no fixed conception of reality, every viewpoint is allowed to be just as it is. You are not stuck in the belief in separation, yet you do not deny conventional existence. All of this may or may not sound really heavy, conceptual, or transcendent, but it is what the great traditions have talked about for centuries. In Zen, it is the "return to the marketplace." In Advaita, it is Shankara's "Brahman is the World." And in Buddhism, it is the Middle Way. In the Middle Way, love, compassion, joy, peace, and freedom are your constant companions.

Real love is totally unpredictable. It has no agenda, except to love at all costs. There is no manual in the world that explains it. It merely acts and moves, and sometimes it goes too far, and so an apology is needed. But this love is healing itself. It may oppose something in order to reveal, in the end, that nothing is opposed to itself in the universe. This makes love look very unstable. But only to the mind that is looking for stability in mental viewpoints. All opposites in the mind are included in love.. This reveals a natural equanimity. And equanimity just happens to look peaceful and loving because, when one is not at war within oneself in any way, he or she is not at war with others. In war, the boundary lines are clear. It’s me v. you. It’s us v. them. This is why love and peace are threatening. They threaten the very lines we have used to create imaginary boundaries around ourselves.

How We Define Ourselves

Whatever the words freedom, love, and peace are pointing to, they do not need to be defended. They are not personal traits. These things are available to anyone who is willing to see through ego, instead of feeding it with reactions. There is no one who can claim freedom, love, and peace to the exclusion of others. So the walls we create through our reactions for or against others (or through neutrality) are not about freedom, love, and peace at all. These walls are for the ego itself. Seeing this whenever it arises is all that is needed. In seeing it, we are already free of it. We see that these are just thoughts and, although thoughts appear to create real boundaries, it is just an appearance. Those divisions aren’t really there. They are facades created by a self that is based in fear-the fear of no longer existing, no longer being someone against something else.

Now notice that the nothingness that is there when no thoughts are appearing is not separate from the something that arises when thought arises. In other words, when no thought is arising, the world is gone. When a thought arises, a thing arises. When many thoughts are arising in a series, one after another, the world of things is appearing. There is no line between the space or nothingness of no thought and the appearance of a thought. To say that a line exists between those things is to rely on a thought that is arising. Only thought creates separation. So there is no awareness apart and separate from the world as it appears.

This is absolute freedom precisely because the need to control the natural flow of thoughts, emotions, states, and experiences is totally gone. That controller is the self. Seeing through the self means seeing through the belief that your experience needs to be manipulated. In the absence of that movement to control and manipulate the appearances or change them or tell stories about how they aren’t supposed to be appearing, there is perfect love and acceptance of life just the way it is happening—right now.

The notion that “all concepts are false” is a concept purporting to be absolutely true, across the board. It is claiming to be the only true concept. So this insight shoots itself in the head in the end. The same goes for “all concepts are equal.” This concept is claiming to be higher than, more true than all other concepts. So it is claiming to be the only concept that is not equal to all the other, lower concepts. This is the self-deception, the insulation, the trap.

And so the pointer “be present” is helpful, but only to a certain extent. In fact, trying to be present and shut out past and future can create tension in the head because what you are really trying to do is stop thought. By stopping thought, you get a sense of the fact that there is only “this moment.” Sounds good at first, but isn’t this just another concept? The invitation above to “drop thought and look in a non-conceptual way” is not an invitation to stop thinking permanently. It is not an invitation to forcefully stop your mind. The very fact that effort is being used to “stop the mind” ought to tell you that the separate self, and its personal force of will, are being used. The story is trying to stop the story.

Life is always just happening, perfectly. I say perfectly not to give the impression that every moment is a burst of total happiness. It’s not that I spend every moment jumping up for joy. There is definitely joy in being as a constant background sense. But the appearances in life are extremely varied. In one moment, there may be hunger, sadness watching a St. Jude’s commercial, dancing to a really cool beat in my bedroom, a huge smile and sense of love as I pet my dog or talk to my partner, intense listening to a client tell her story in my office (or distraction away from listening to her if something else appears prominent in awareness like a thought or a sound in the other room), or pain in the chest from indigestion. It doesn’t matter. It’s all allowed just as it is, precisely when it happens, but it isn’t allowed by a center called “me.” There is no sense that there is someone trying to bring about any experience, or recreate an experience, or reflect backwards in time or forwards in time for a sense of self. There is only ‘This,” which is living happening in this big space that never moves. And whatever I am is not separate from the space. But that is just the way it is experienced. Even the words, "whatever I am is not separate from the space" feel very light and empty. There is no religion in those words. It's just a simple description, just as "ah, the sun is shining today."

Seeing Through The Witness

And that’s the freedom. There is no witness. A witness is still fear operating from the sense of a separate entity, one that is afraid of what’s happening, trying to keep some distance from it. It’s very easy to hide in words like “awareness” or "being" or "Oneness" and walk around convincing yourself and others of your certainty. This is all in some attempt to avoid the total uncertainty, vulnerability, and unknowing involved in the kind of freedom being described here. It is much safer to just hang out in the idea that I’m watching everything come and go. When there is seen to be no boundary between that which is watching and what is being watched, between awareness and its content, there is no way to know or control what is going to happen. This means one could die in the next moment or win the lottery. And there is a knowing that, whatever happens, that is what I am. I am what is happening. It’s that simple. No division. No boundary. No desire to change circumstances, people, or things. All is, perfect as it is, just because it is, and I am that.

"Nobody ever has any truth, just various degrees of falsehood." Ken Wilber. Shockingly, even nondual realization is only a partial view.

In this talk, Jeff Saltzman and Scott talk about Integral Theory as it pertains to states. Jeff and Scott discuss how causal emptiness is different from nonduality. Jeff explains that integral seems to really come online with the capacity to integrate views. At certain stages of our lives, we really believe that only our single view or interpretation or state is correct. In realizing causal emptiness, that seems to be an arriving point. The conceptual world falls away. The mountains vanish. But as they say in Zen, "the mountains return," but they are seen to be none other than your Self. And so the whole world comes alive at Integral: "Brahman is the world."

At integral, paradoxes are held. One no longer clings to only one view including the view that non-conceptual emptiness is the only view or that non-duality is some kind of end point. As emptiness is seen as none other than form, as the appearances are seen as not independent of awareness, there is the possibility of not clinging to any single form, or single view. This is a discovery of the world you thought you knew, but that now looks very different. At integral, every view is included. It is no longer about "only my view is true," the question becomes, "What else is true?"

The real treasure of awareness is seeing that thoughts, emotions, states, and experiences seamlessly, dynamically, and naturally bleed into one other so much so that the dividing line between them is seen as not real. Thinking will tell you that the experience of eating cake is a separate and distinct act from thinking about drag racing. But direct experience reveals that there is a seamless flow. Basic awareness appears seamlessly as eating cake and then thinking about drag racing. Only thought divides those up into discrete things. The real beauty is that the thought that divides those things up also seamlessly appears from basic awareness. And the beauty beyond that is that there is a seamlessness even between awareness and the appearances of awareness, between awareness and thinking, between awareness and eating cake, between awareness and thinking about awareness, and between awareness and thinking about eating cake. It sounds complicated until you rely on direct experience. At that point, it is simply the truth.

This is the first in a series with Rabbi Marc Gafni. Marc states that emptiness or pure awareness does not evolve. It is eternal and unchanging. Marc states that form does evolve (i.e., evolution being the capacity to take more perspectives rather than being identified only with one perspective). Self-realization is interpreted differently in different cultures and contexts yet there is a universal awareness in which those perspectives appear. Marc points directly to this larger field of perspectives and how Integral emerges as this seeing. When the "I" is no longer identified only with its perspective, whether that is a Christian, Buddhist, Advaita, Democratic, or some other perspective, and these perspectives become objects appearing in this "I" awareness, that is evolution. This is the simplest thing, so simple that a concept can never grasp it. What you are is the awake space that is looking now. The content of awareness is not what you are. Therefore, the constant looking back into past to measure whether you are better or more at peace now than you were back then just strengthens ego. And projecting forward to a time when you believe you will be freer or more at peace does the same. This measuring back and projecting forward is the content of awareness. It is the time-bound, thought-based false self. What is being pointed to here is the awareness in which content arises. That awareness is what you really are. In that recognition, all personal seeking and suffering ends. Nothing is carried over in time. Everything is allowed to be just as it is, right now. This is total and complete acceptance and love of what is.

To be open means to meet your guru everywhere. Your guru is not just within you. It is not just the pure awareness that you have found to be your true nature. It is not just in the spiritual insights that you experience, hold in memory or read about in books. It is not just your favorite spiritual writer, teacher, or lineage. It is also your enemy. It is the one who disagrees with you, the one that pisses you off. It is the person who is trying to teach you something while you remain closed to what he or she is saying. It is everything and everyone. Don't miss this by claiming "there are no people." Although it is true that separation is unreal, the moment that is turned into a belief, it is no longer true. It is merely belief. Beliefs have to be defended because they are not absolutely true. In defending any belief, learning and listening stop.

Mokshananda ("Joe Sousa") lives in Santa Cruz, CA, where, in addition to his psychotherapy practice, he offers Satsang, intensives, retreats and Dokusan (private spiritual counseling). He also travels the western United States and Canada offering Satsang and intensives and teachings. In 1999, he was invited to teach by Adyashanti. In 2008, Ken Wilber invited Mokshananda to teach as part of Integral Institute's Integral Spiritual Center. This discussion talks about Integral Theory among other things. When there is an openness to the Integral framework, the entire universe begins to look different and feel very rich.

Enlightenment is not about just seeing through a thought-based false self. Identification with emotions fuel that self. Awareness is appearing not just as thought but also emotion. This points to recognizing the awareness that is prior to, surrounds, and permeates each emotion. You aren't angry or an angry person. That is a story. Anger is a raw energy arising in what you are. The difference is critical.

Form is not other than formlessness and formlessness is not other than form, as the Buddhist Sutra says. Thought does not have an existence that is independent of awareness. Sound does not have an existence independent of silence. In reality, there are not two here. Enlightenment is merely pointing to reality itself. Denying thought (form) is denying awareness itself. To deny thought is to make an assumption that is not based in reality. The assumption is that you can split off a part of reality from another part of reality.
